Season 2 of The Last of Us finished in a manner that rendered fans almost speechless. Definitely, it was not a usual ending; it was open, full of emotions, and raised various issues. At the center of it all was Ellie, struggling with loss, revenge, and the emotional weight of her choices.
The episode begins with two strange words—“Wheel” and “Whale”—spoken by Nora before she dies. That hint drives Ellie on a life-risking mission to catch Abby, the individual who is accountable for the death of Joel.On her way, Ellie gets entangled in a cruel conflict of two factions with deadly actions–the Wolves (WLF) and the Seraphites. She almost takes her last breath during the disorder, but somehow finds the power to keep moving that is fueled by her hatred and sorrow.

Eventually, she finds herself at an aquarium, where Abby’s close friends, Owen and Mel, are hiding. Ellie confronts them, desperate to find out where Abby is. Things go south fast—Owen reaches for a gun, and Ellie shoots him. Then, in a moment of panic, she kills Mel too. It’s only afterward she realizes Mel was pregnant. That moment breaks Ellie—but she doesn’t get time to process it. Jesse and Tommy show up to take her back to safety. Tommy isn’t there to support her revenge—he just wants to bring her home to Jackson.
But before they can leave, Abby shows up—angry and grieving. She shoots Jesse dead and injures Tommy. Abby believes Tommy is the one who killed her friends, but Ellie steps in and confesses: it was her. Abby is furious. She had once let Ellie live, hoping the cycle of violence would stop. But now, she feels that chance was wasted. Without hesitation, she shoots Ellie.
Then—black screen. We don’t know if Ellie survives.
The episode ends by flashing back to three days earlier, giving us a look at Abby’s life inside the WLF base. It’s a clear hint that Season 3 will focus more on Abby’s story and the emotional aftermath of everything that’s happened.
What to Expect in Season 3

Season 2 may have ended on a dark note, but it also left fans deeply invested. With compelling characters, genuine feelings, and a narrative with a punch, The Last of Us keeps displaying why it remains one of the most talked-about shows on television.
We don’t have the slightest idea about what will come next, but what we do know for sure is that it won’t be something that lacks intensity.
